This is the second book for Unegbu, the first being Comedy Under Attack (2003). Unegbu studied journalism at Columbia after graduating law school at the University of Miami. Prior to his admission to the New York bar, he practiced law in Miami and served as a law clerk at the International Court of Arbitration in Paris. He was a reporter at The Real Deal Magazine before taking on the editorship of Comedybeat.com. His articles have appeared in Reuters Forum Journal, World Policy Magazine, New York Review of Magazines, Gotham Gazette, City Limits and New Your County Lawyer.
Carl Unegbu, considered the foremost authority on comedy and the law, has written an entire book using comedy legends and others as cautionary tales that help comedians become aware of ways to avert lawsuits and legal entanglements. Carl is a New York attorney, longtime editor of Comedybeat website and subsequently the writer of a highly-read blog called O’Carl’s Law focusing on the intersection between comedy and law. Carl also co-hosted a quarterly forum in Manhattan called Comedy Dialogue which regularly served up a great combo of stand-up comedy performances and panel discussions.
Carl’s new book Comedy Goes to Court: When People Stop Laughing and Start Fighting ensures that people who work in the comedy arena take the smart steps to prevent the disagreements, contractual missteps and on or off-stage rhetoric or behavior that can result is expensive lawsuits. He directly addresses how far you can go and have the First Amendment protect you.
There’s lots of lessons here for anyone in the entertainment business, not just comedians or comedy actors. And even if you aren’t trying to make a living telling jokes, you’ll find these fascinating stories revealing about our society and the world. His book has been described as a “must read” for comedians and a “should-read” for everybody else in our contemporary society that has become so polarized.
