Speaker 1

00:06

Welcome to the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence 2024. Thank you for being here today with us. Your presence signifies a powerful commitment of making the difference in the lives of many. Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, we come together to honor this vital cause and acknowledge the courage of those who have paved the way for our fight, especially the Maribald Sisters.

S1

Speaker 1

00:56

Today, as we gather under the team towards Beijing plus 30 unite to end violence against women and girls. We empathize the unity and strength we need to confront and eliminate gender-based violence. This theme resonates deeply as it reminds us that our collective efforts can make a tangible difference. Can make a tangible difference.

S1

Speaker 1

01:37

For us at Eagles and Power to Soar, today marks a milestone of 5 years being dedicated to this crucial issue, the 16 days of activism. It's not just a campaign but a global movement that began in 1991 through the efforts of the Center for Women's Global Leadership. But most significantly, it gained momentum through a heartbreaking story of the Maribol sisters, Patricia Minerva and Maria Theresa, who stood fiercely against oppression only to lose their lives for their unwavering commitment to justice. Their story is a somber 1, yet a powerful reminder that the fight against gender-based violence is not just a distant concern, it is a struggle faced by many, even as the cost of their lives.

S1

Speaker 1

03:04

They stood up for their beliefs with extraordinary courage. And today we honor their legacy by continuing their fight. In their honor, the Butterfly Campaign was established to keep their memory alive, reminding us that our struggle has roots in tragedy. Yet, it is also fueled by a profound hope for a peaceful and just world.

S1

Speaker 1

03:43

The tease. Each of us is called to be a butterfly in our own communities, spreading awareness, compassion and strength. You may ask, why is this movement essential? According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 3 women globally has experienced physical or sexual violence, even at the hands of someone they know.

S1

Speaker 1

04:29

These figures are not just statistics, they represent real lives. They symbolize the mothers, daughters, sisters and friends who like I once did, suffer in silence. And now as I stand before you, I share a deeply personal journey, 1 that has profoundly shaped who I am today. I'm a survivor of gender-based violence.

S1

Speaker 1

05:09

For many years, I carried the weight of these experiences, feeling trapped in a cycle of pain and silence. However, through these challenges, I unearthed a wellspring of resilience within myself. I realized that my journey wasn't just about surviving. It became a powerful commitment to stand up not for myself but for others who share similar stories.

S1

Speaker 1

05:55

I found that by using my voice, I could advocate for change and support those who felt that they had none. At Eagles and Power to Soar, our vision is clear. To help women and girls achieve their full potential in a safe environment free from violence. We are committed to breaking the silence of violence through support, education, and advocacy.

S1

Speaker 1

06:33

Through support, education, and advocacy. As we embark on the 16 days journey together, let's commit to making a difference in our neighborhoods and communities. Remember the words of Malala. We realize the importance of our voices only when we are silent.

S1

Speaker 1

07:05

Our journey does not end today. It continues in every day of our lives. And we all should strive to ensure the voices of those who are hurting are heard. Not just today, but for 365 days.

S1

Speaker 1

07:32

Before I conclude, I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to some individuals who are incredible. A special thank you to Linda Banja, our partner and the driving force behind Hold My Hand Organization. Linda, your passion and dedication have truly made this event possible. Thank you.

S1

Speaker 1

08:10

Thank you for uniting us for this important cause. I also want to express my appreciation for our remarkable virtual assistant, Nelius. Your diligence behind the scenes has ensured that everything runs smoothly, allowing us to focus on the significance of today. And to our courageous speakers, thank you for sharing your stories, your willingness to be vulnerable inspires us all and encourage everyone present to take action.

S1

Speaker 1

08:59

And my call to action is as we embark on these 16 days of activism, let's channel our collective voices to spread awareness, educate ourselves and others, advocate for policy changes, and empower those around us. Just as the Maribel Sisters bravely inspired us, we can break the silence and speak the narrative together. Thank you for supporting this vital movement. Together we can create a fair, safe and respectful world for everyone regardless of gender.

S1

Speaker 1

09:55

Thank you. And now I invite Linda Banja. Linda. Linda Banja.

S1

Speaker 1

10:03

Linda.

S2

Speaker 2

10:05

Shamin, that was quite eluded. But thank you once again for having us as well. Thank you for having us on your platform.

S2

Speaker 2

10:18

It's an honor for us to be graced within this platform. But Lord, just as you've mentioned, it's not just for this day that we'll be celebrating the violence that different people go through. Let it be every day that we realize that people out there who are hurting have gone through heinous things. But most importantly, be there to realize that you, that person can be your sister, that person can be your mom, your grandmother, your best friend, your wife.

S2

Speaker 2

10:58

So let us not shy away and feel like we need to ostracize these people. We need to come together, not just on these platforms. And I'm saying that not this thing happened just on the 16 days of gender activism. Let every day be a day of activism for all of us, because we cannot function, we cannot be at our best if somebody next to us is hurting, if somebody next to us is being violated, if somebody next to us is being ostracized.

S2

Speaker 2

11:31

Let us be that voice of change and be there for people because a lot of us are going through a lot of things but we are hurting inside. We only get to realize it when somebody has passed on which is wrong. Be that voice of change. Be there for every person that's next to you.

S2

Speaker 2

11:52

But above all, let us also deal with the perpetrators of these violence. There are men out there who keep raping women day and night. And these are people we know. These are not people who are strangers to us.

S2

Speaker 2

12:07

These are our friends. These are our bosses. These are our partners. And violations are not just defined by sexuality.

S2

Speaker 2

12:17

There's mental violence. There's physical violence. There's psychological violence. So let us not shell these things away.

S2

Speaker 2

12:26

But most importantly, just the way you'd love to have a full life and a happy life. Ensure that person that's next to you is okay. And okay doesn't mean by that person smiling. Find out, are you really, really okay?

S2

Speaker 2

12:43

And we'll make this world a much better place. Thank you, Shalu.

S1

Speaker 1

12:49

Thank you, Simba. And I want to thank our listeners and encourage you to join us over the next 15 days to hear subject experts on policy, to hear survivors share their stories, and to hear the legal aspect of gender-based violence. We look forward to your support and don't forget that 1 thing you can do that will not cost you anything is to actually share this video with your friends, with your community.

S1

Speaker 1

13:38

Thank you so much and we'll see you during the next broadcast.
