Finally build that business you've been dreaming about - because showing your kids how to chase dreams is the greatest legacy of all.
00:01 Hello everyone and welcome to rewrite the script. I bet you are burning the camels at both end right now, doing all the things for everyone because that's what we do as moms, right? And maybe you have been thinking about starting a side hustle now that your kids are a little older, or leaving that sucky corporate job to do what you really want to do. Do you have a business idea that won't let go? The one that whispers to you in quiet moments that excites you when you imagine what your days could be like? Those quiet moments when the house is finally still? If you get those, when you allow yourself to dream, they're telling you something important.
00:44 They're showing you a glimpse of what's possible now right now you might be saving free business webinars for someday you'll get to them thinking about your ideas in the middle of the night, making your dreams small enough to fit in with your family life. We've all been there, Telling yourself that you will wait until the kids are older i hear this all the time and I know this place well. I've been there with so many bookmark tabs researching that you think I'll get to those eventually going down rabbit holes for hours because you're excited about the topic and you want to learn more and you fill up your notes app with ideas, but then you don't do anything with them.
01:31 Now I have helped them Bishops, moms like you move beyond this place and I have been able to help them because I did it for myself first and I understand the demands on moms and how quickly we can lose sight of our dreams when all of the different things come up. I'm Lisa Avila, I'm a business strategist with over 25 years experience. For over a decade I helped run a family wine business while raising 3 very young boys. And I hustled. I traveled sales trips, pumping in airport bathrooms, running the tasting room, managing staff. It was a lot and I lost myself in the process of trying to make everyone happy and make money after that venture.
02:22 Because working in a family business isn't all roses, I worked at a nonprofit where it turns out I was also hustling. I was dropping the kids off and then rushing the commute to get to work and skipping lunch so that I could pick them up from school and get them to practice on time. And there finally came a point where I said, enough, I just can't do this anymore. I didn't have the option of being a stay at home mom, but also I didn't really want to be 1. I like to work, and I wanted to make a difference outside of the home, but I also wanted to make my own hours. And so as the founder of Poppy Grove, I've made it my mission to help moms turn those quiet dreams into thriving businesses so that they can have time and financial freedom.
03:14 And through countless moments of doubt as an employee, as a mompreneur, I learned something powerful. The greatest gift we can give our children isn't just our presence, it is by leading by example.
03:32 Now society has written plenty of rules for moms with big dreams, hasn't it? We've all heard them, maybe even from family or well meaning colleagues. Focus on your family first. You can't be fully present for both work and your family. Something always has to give, which usually they mean it's us who has to give. Can't you just wait until the kids are older? You're being selfish to want more. Can't you just be grateful for what you have? I used to get that one a lot. And then also you can't have it all even though if you remember those commercials saying you could bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan now they're saying well you can't have it all even though we were told to check all the boxes.
04:18 I had a client who'd been holding on to her business idea for years. 8 years to be exact. She was following all the rules about being a good mother, only writing her poetry during late night hours during her lunch at work, never letting her dreams disrupt family time. And then one day was really when her terrible boss was just she had had it. It hit her. She needed to share her work with the world and have her own business get out of this job and share her poetry. What if something happened to her and she never got to? And I really she sat with that and she knew she had to go after her dream because would she be OK with this happening with her children's dreams? Absolutely not.
05:11 And I don't think this gets talked to. Near talked about nearly enough, what waiting really costs us, not just for you, but for everyone watching and for everyone you love. My client had two boys watching her stuff her dreams down and keep her poetry hidden in her notebook, in her bedroom, in the night stand, and she decided not to move forward. Her sons would have missed out on lessons and chasing their dreams.
05:39 The legacy of believing in themselves, the impact they can make when you go after your dreams. But every time we put our dreams on hold, we're sending a message not just to ourselves, but to our children. A message it says mom's drinks aren't that important, or they think you were made to simply be at their back and call, which I'm sure you have all seen in the long run, that isn't what our children need.
06:11 Now you may be saying, OK, yes, I agree with all of this Lisa, but who am I to think I can start a business? And I say as a mom, you already have so many CEO skills that are transferable. And when I say CEOI like to think of it as confident, empowered and organized. Look at this list of all the things you do on the daily, the management, the planning, the budgeting, putting out fires, running your family. You use these skills each day to move mountains for your family. And I bet with support and accountability, you could do the same with your business dreams.
06:54 My oldest son, he's a freshman in college and he called me recently, which doesn't happen much because we usually just text because, you know, he's busy off living his life. But he was excited to tell me that he'd become the leadership development chair for his fraternity. Well, I said, OK, what's that all about? And his reason, He said, mom, I grew up watching you help people build their dreams, and I want to do that also. I got so teary.
07:23 You know, I geek out on things like LinkedIn and marketing and Google Calendar. And I'm sure my kids over the years have rolled their eyes at me. But now they see that I'm actually helping people do that, set up these systems, and he wants to do the same. There were moments over the years where I wondered, well, maybe I should play a little smaller and not worry about making an impact and helping moms. But hearing him say this to me, that he wanted to help people, also reinforced to me to me that our children are watching us. Yes, they hear about possibilities in school, but they are more likely to go after them when they see their role models doing it.
08:03 And this can only happen when we stop waiting and we start creating and building.
08:11 I tell all my clients it's time to write a new script. Society can say what they will, but we know what's best for us and for our families. And I'm not saying it's going to be a cakewalk. Nothing ever is. Motherhood sure isn't. But you don't want to be on your deathbed regretting not going after your dreams. And you can start now, not wait for that someday. You can build your dreams while loving your family. You can create impact through example and show your kids what's possible. And you can lead with love and purpose.
08:51 And starting doesn't mean completely restructuring your family life, having everything figured out right now. It doesn't mean making huge dramatic changes and knowing exactly where you'll end up. Nobody knows that starting actually means protecting a couple of hours each week for your vision, or taking one small step forward to build a sustainable business foundation. It means holding boundaries to honor your goals and your time, and believing in yourself just a little bit more today than yesterday. It's not about building complex systems, working a ton of hours, getting the perfect website, it's about creating harmony between your business and your family and what works best for all of you.
09:43 What I want from my boys is for them to go after every dream they have and when they have a family, to keep dreaming and also be a present dad. I've shown them what it looks like to believe in yourself enough to chase your dreams while still being at their football and soccer games, taking them on vacation, I mean beach days because I can. I make my own hours and I show up as the best version of me in both business and when I'm with them.
10:15 I want to encourage you to move forward at a speed that feels right for your life, but please don't let some day or when they are older take over. Your time is precious. Your vision matters.
