Khatiya Mwewa - F*** Hustle Culture

Stop glorifying busy and start celebrating balance: A bold talk on why self-care is the real key to success in business and life.

00:01  Hello everyone, and welcome to my presentation called Fuck Hustle Culture, where we're going to learn how to take your power back and actually build a business that works for you and not against you. So let's get started a little bit about me. Hi there, I'm Khatiya and I love to help ambitious and driven women who struggle with burnout find a healthy balance between self-care and productivity because you can prioritize your well being and succeed at your goals in business and life. A lot of people will tell you that self-care and productivity are two separate things and they can't fit in the same sentence, but that is probably exactly why they feel burnt out and exhausted every single time.
00:41  I believe that if you want to be, if you want to succeed at your goals, you have to find a good balance between taking care of yourself and being productive because I personally know what it's like to put your health on the back burner because you're a high achiever. So I'm a massive foodie. I love old sitcoms like Friends and Gilmore Girls. I love old music too. I'm a big believer in self-care that doesn't feel like another chore and I'm all about finding calm, intentional ways to balance life, Wellness and ambition because like I said, I know exactly what it's like to take on so many things and forget yourself in the process.

01:19  So I've got two siblings that I love and hate in equal measure. I think you, most of you would know what it's like. And when I'm not working, you'll catch me binge listening to true crime podcasts or dancing around to some R and B because I just really love that. So who is this for? Now we're going to play a little game called Put a finger down. And if you aren't familiar with this game, this is how it works.

01:44  So you're going to lift your hand up your left or your right, and I'm going to say a statement and if you relate to it, you're going to put a finger down. So we're going to start put a finger down if you can't remember the last time you slept for at least six hours. Put a finger down if you normally eat one meal a day and it's something makeshift like girl dinner, put a finger down if you have 15 things on your To Do List for today and you've only done 2. Put a finger down if you feel exhausted all the time and don't know why. Put a finger down If you feel pressured to do 100 things to grow your business after seeing successful people on social media, specifically LinkedIn and Instagram.

02:28  So now if we've got into the end and you have three to five fingers down, then stay tuned because this is definitely for you. And I mentioned LinkedIn and Instagram because I feel like these platforms make it seem like everyone is doing so much and you're doing nothing at all so don't compare yourself everybody's journey is different and a lot of people just make they just put their successes on social media and don't actually show you a lot of the sleepless nights that they get. So what even is hustle culture? You've maybe heard of it and you maybe haven't, but basically it's a work ethic that prioritizes and success over well-being as I like to say it.

03:10  In short, it implies that if you do not have sleepless nights endless to do lists and eat one meal a day or just, you know, shitty snacks along the day, you will not achieve your goals. And it's something that is very common in the workplace and among and among lots of entrepreneurs. And you have probably found yourself in this cycle too. I have, you know, I'm still very much recovering from this concept because it never did anything for me, but literally just like ruined my body and my mental health and that is exactly why I do not, you know, like this.

03:42  So here are a few more reasons why I hate this. So I thought, you know, working 16 hour days, skipping meals and sacrificing sleep was the only way, you know, I could succeed i thought this was the price that I had to pay, you know, to succeed. And in a world that glorifies suffering, you feel like if you don't suffer enough, you know, you won't get anywhere everyone feel, you see somebody who's, you know, succeeded and you're like, oh, my God, this person probably never slept and that could be true. But again, it couldn't it could not be true and it's actually not even healthy to do any of these things.

04:17  Doing all these 16 hour work days and not eating, I was barely getting by and I was always exhausted and angry and irritated and my body felt awful. And at some point I was like, you know, fuck this, you know, fuck hustle culture, you know, why should you lose yourself for something when you can achieve better goals by prioritizing your well being? So here are some science backed evidence as to why rest and taking breaks.

04:48  Yeah, as to why rest and taking breaks is actually more productive than not doing any of these things so multiple studies have been done and shown that taking breaks and rest have been linked to higher productivity, increased focus. It gives your brain a chance to recover from mental fatigue and non-stop pushing leads to exhaustion and burnout. Now I know as high achievers when somebody tells you to take a break or to slow down, it just feels like, Oh my God, I'm going to have so much work, I'm going to be so behind. But this doesn't mean you're going to take 5 hour breaks or 6 hour breaks. You can take strategic breaks within your work day to make sure you're literally like charging yourself, you know, so you could do this thing maybe I'm somebody who I'm sure a lot of you have heard maybe about the product, the Pomodoro technique and if you haven't, it works like this where you work, work, work for a period of time and you take a short break and it's usually in shorter intervals.

05:46  So for example, maybe if you do work for 25 minutes and then you take a 5 minute break and then you do 25 minutes and you work for 5 minutes and you take a 5 minute break. But for me, I prefer doing deep work sessions. So I will work deeply for maybe three hours and then I'll take a 30 minute break or an hour break and three hours and do the same and at the end of the day, like I'm going to achieve more and my body's going to feel a whole lot better as I mentioned, it gives you a chance, a brain to recover from all that mental stress and fatigue that you're putting on it.

06:17  So start it like that, you know, start with small break, try to see what works for you. If you want, you can do that thing where you, you work for 30 minutes, take a 5 minute break or you can do what I do and do deep work for three hours this is no distractions, no social media, no phone, no thing, unless of course you know, you're doing your content on social media and maybe take a 30 minute break and you're going to see how much work you're going to end up doing then if you worked for five to seven hours non-stop So here's why you need to ditch this concept like the F now.

06:50  Number one, it's sucking the light out of you, literally, and probably you can't even feel it, or maybe you do because I'm sure your body probably feels awful. Number number two You're doing more work for a little results. Like you have all of these things that you want to do and at the end of the day, you're doing so many things and you're doing 80 % of the work and you're only seeing 20 % results and you feel like you're doing so much and you can't even figure out why you're not where you want to be or why you're not seeing the results that you want to see number three if you don't take care of your body, it won't work as well as you want it to oK.

07:28  You know, we're business owners, entrepreneurs, maybe if you. Yeah, we're business owners we're entrepreneurs. And our literal like your body is your machine, you know, and if you want to take care of it, I mean, if you don't service your car, if you don't take care of your car, it's not going to move or work as well as you want it to if anything, it could actually kill you in the process and it's the same thing with your body. If you want it to work as well as you wanted to, you want to reach Max level of productivity and actually get more done.

07:55  You need to take care of your body and give it the rest that it it needs. Hustle culture is also probably taking a toll on your relationships why? Because you never have any time, you know, maybe you're having, you know, trouble with your partner or your kids or just, you know, your friends because they feel like they never get any time with you because you're always work, work, work, work. And it's probably also the reason that you're mad and irritable all the time and you always feel like you're never doing enough. And that's the contradiction here, you see. So you're always doing more and getting little results. And then at the end of the day, you end up feeling like you're not doing enough, even though you're already doing so much more than you're supposed to be doing.

08:39  So here now I'm going to teach you some simple tips to prioritize your well being while growing your business. So remember when we said you're doing so many things but are seeing little results? Yeah, it's probably because you're not doing high impact tasks. Ok, High impact tasks. So this is basically tasks that generate revenue in your business, not everything in your business oK, Every there's so many important aspects of your business, let me put it like this, but there are some things that you need to focus on that actually bring the revenue, OK? So focus on doing 20 % of high impact tasks so that you can get 80 % of the results you can reap 80 % of your results.

09:25  Another thing is you need to automate or delegate certain tasks that can be done without you. So if you have a team, I know how hard it is sometimes if you're someone like me, you want things done a certain way. And if you feel like, and if you, if you feel like if you give them to somebody else, you know, it'll probably be done in a shitty way or just in a way that you don't like.

09:47  But you need to get used to delegating certain tasks that can be done without you. If you're always in charge of social media, blog posting, your email, list there are certain things that only you need to do and other things that you can actually delegate to a member of the team. Now, if you're like me and you're a solopreneur and you don't really have a team, this is where automation takes place. And yeah, if you have the budget, you can pay for a lot of these expensive automation. Yeah, automation things. But if you automation tools, sorry, but if you don't have the budget, you can start small, something small like, you know, automating your email welcome sequence, automating your invoices, things like that just small, small things.

10:30  Or you can actually maybe start with tools like Zapier that will actually get you to automate a few things that you do very regularly. Repetitive tasks can easily be automated and also set times to do things that you love. Like everyone thinks that you need a complicated self-care routine to get things done, but sometimes it just starts with doing small things that you love. For example, for me, I love teas if if if you know me, you know that I love herbal teas. So I make it a habit of every morning I prepare this lovely herbal tea, you know, for me and it's it's something that I love to do so just start with small things, small judge you like to take a walk in nature before you do anything, take a walk, go for a job, just do something that you love and then set clear boundaries for yourself and your business.

11:22  So what does this mean? The first thing you need to do is set working hours or set working days if anything, if you you if you don't want to set working hours, set working days. For me, I said it that I don't work on Sundays and on on Saturdays I work up to one, PM but I don't do a lot of like high energy things it's mostly just working, checking through my analytics and creating my action plan for the next week. So it's not a lot of heavy impact so that I can rest, you know, and spend time with my family and just recharge myself.

11:59  And then the last thing you're going to do is to practice simple and micro self care habits each day or every other day. So this comes back to the things you love you know, you need to assess your needs, your physical, your spiritual, your emotional needs and see what small self-care habits you can fit into each day or every other day. It's as simple as taking a 5 minute break to, you know, take some deep breaths or do some meditating.

12:25  Just those small, simple things that can recharge you as you go through your day. Now we're going to talk about the always busy mindset and why you should teach this too. So with hustle culture, there's always this, there's this always busy mindset that you're forced to have even when you're doing literally nothing. You know you have planners and planners full of shit that you've never executed.

12:51  Literally planning and organizing yourself into oblivion. You know you need to get rid of this because if you think this way, you're always going to be in this virtual rush hour, rushing, rushing, rushing, rushing but then at the end of the day, you've actually done nothing. And because of this, you will never be able to set a wait time for yourself and separate your life from your business.

13:15  So this is what I need you to do next because I love to give some action tips. So number one throw out your current To Do List. Just hear me out just throw it out. Ok? Throw it out. Number two, rewrite it with three to five high impact tasks for the week. And then you're also going to make a things I love list. Just start small with maybe three or five and you're going to identify 2 main tasks that you can automate within your business things like emails or invoices, you know, things like that.

13:48  And lastly, don't forget to chill out. Ok, take it easy, chill out. Now I have a gift for you, a little guide that's gonna help you, you know, just identify some high impact tasks and also identify energy draining tasks and how you can deal with them. And also give you a few more ways on how you can incorporate self-care into your daily life and help you prioritize more learn how learn how to let go of some things for now and also how you can delegate an automated made some stuff it's linked below. And yeah, I hope you enjoyed this presentation feel free to connect with me on my socials and if you watch this, please do.

14:30  You can come ahead and reach me on Instagram or Facebook. Tell me what you thought of the presentation i'll be happy to hear from you. Thank you so much goodbye.
