Episode Summary

How to Respond Mindfully and Empower Others

Key Takeaways:

Mindful Communication: The episode explores the importance of responding mindfully to others, especially when their news or situation might not align with our personal opinions or judgments.

Empowering Others Without Judgment: When someone shares significant life updates (e.g., pregnancy), it’s crucial to respond in a way that empowers them without imposing your own biases. For example, affirm their capabilities ("You are going to be an amazing parent") rather than reacting from a place of judgment.

Truthful Affirmations: Find genuine statements that honor both your truth and the other person’s experience. This approach respects both parties' perspectives while fostering positive interactions.

Handling Unexpected Situations Gracefully: Whether it's someone getting the last item at a coffee shop or sharing unexpected news, focus on uplifting responses like wishing enjoyment instead of expressing disappointment.

Practical Tips:

Pause Before Responding:

Allow yourself time for an "awkward pause" before replying.
Use fillers if needed ("Give me a moment…") to process information thoughtfully.

Be Present and Calm:

Approach conversations with mindfulness.
Your response can impact relationships significantly; take this responsibility seriously.

Practice Loving Kindness:

Commit daily to respond lovingly, kindly, and calmly.
Recognize that consistent mindful communication can have beautiful outcomes in relationships.

Avoid Denial Tactics:

Don’t cover up discomfort with false positivity (like putting a smiley face over an empty gas tank).
Acknowledge your feelings but choose words that uplift rather than diminish another's joy or excitement.

Reflections:
Being mindful about how we communicate is more important today than ever before—it shapes our lives and relationships profoundly.
Quiet moments filled with thoughtful pauses allow us to connect deeply by honoring each other's truths authentically.

Thank you for joining Kim & Jill in exploring how small shifts in communication can lead us towards more meaningful connections! Enjoy embracing calmness and kindness throughout your day!

Hello, everyone, and good morning, Kim. Good morning, Jill. Good morning, everyone. Our message for today has to do with how we respond to other people, specifically what we would say to them when they have something great going on in their life that we may not view as great or positive. Perhaps we might have some judgments or opinions about it. The question is, how do you respond to those people?

I want to share a personal experience that popped into my head this morning. There is a younger girl who came to mind, and I imagined her saying, “Hey, Kim, I’m pregnant.” My initial ego mind reacted with surprise and judgment—“What? She’s pregnant?” However, I then received a message urging me to consider how I would respond to her without taking away her power or imposing my opinions and judgments onto her. What could I say that would be a positive statement and prevent her from falling into fear or disappointment within herself?

I took a moment to reflect on this and thought about what kind of response I could give. One option was to ask her how she felt about it, which would put the focus back on her but might also imply agreement with her situation. If she expressed excitement, I might find myself saying something like, “Oh my gosh, that’s great,” even if inside I didn’t genuinely feel that way. This internal conflict would place me in a position of judgment where my words wouldn’t align with my true feelings.

Then I thought about a more authentic response: “You are going to be an amazing parent.” Deep down, I know she has the potential to be wonderful in that role. This kind of statement honors both my truth and hers; it empowers her without diminishing her excitement or making her feel like having a child young is a detriment.

This led me to think about other everyday situations. For instance, if you’re at a coffee shop and someone grabs the last of something you wanted, instead of feeling resentful or disappointed, you could say to them, “I really hope you enjoy that because it tastes so good.” This response honors your feelings while allowing the other person to feel no guilt about their choice.

Today is an important day for paying attention to how we deliver our messages to others. You can remain true to yourself while still uplifting those around you. It’s interesting because it feels as though we need new words to describe our experiences better.

Years ago, someone mentioned the idea of putting a smiley face over an empty gas tank—this represents denial. We don’t want to deny our feelings; if we’re feeling depleted, we can acknowledge that without passing it on to others. Often, we unconsciously pull others into our emotional state without realizing it.

In the scenario of the young person who shared news of her pregnancy, instead of expressing concern based on age or circumstances—saying things like “Oh gee, that's going to be hard”—we can affirm their potential by recognizing their capacity for greatness.

It’s crucial to take a pause before responding. We often rush into replies without fully processing what someone has shared with us. Slowing down gives us time to collect our thoughts and respond mindfully. This quiet moment before responding is incredibly important; it allows us to communicate in a loving and calm manner.

This mindfulness in our responses can profoundly impact our relationships and even change the trajectory of our lives. It’s essential today—regardless of when you’re listening—to be intentional with your responses. Loving, kind, calm, mindful responses are easier than we think but require commitment and decision-making.

The results of such mindful communication are phenomenal; they lead to beautiful interactions and relationships.

Thank you for joining us today! Enjoy your quiet, calm, loving, kind, mindful day. Until next time!
