In Episode 01 of the Shalemess Wisdom Podcast with Natacha Guyot, PhD, we discuss different types of ethics professional tarot readers want to establish for healthy boundaries and create a welcoming and safe experience for their clients. We review the benefits of ethics for all parties involved, as well as where to feature your ethics for clarity and ease of use for your potential and returning clients.

Welcome to the Shameless Wisdom Podcast where we rebel against patriarchy bullshit and help you stand in your power to take aligned to action.

What are your expectations when you book a Tarot reading?

How do you know that the reader is going to create a safe space for you?

And if you're a professional Tarot reader, even if you use Oracle and slash or Lenormand cards as well, how do you make sure that your clients know they can trust you?

This is where ethics as a professional reader come into play.

They're not only important for potential clients, but also to set boundaries as a reader.

There are two main types of ethics to consider.

The first one falls more on the legal side of things, and the other one is more on your professional preferences and boundaries as a reader.

Let's dive in.

The first type of ethics as a professional reader I want to talk about are legal ones.

Now I will note that I am not an attorney.

What I'm sharing in this video does not constitute legal advice, so if you have questions, make sure to talk to an actual lawyer.

What I am sharing here is based on my research and my own experience as a professional Tarot

reader.

In my case, I live in the US, so I only provide readings for people who are 21 years old or older.

Confidentiality is another of those legal requirements that you want to fulfill, and that clearly that every information exchanged during the reading, however it is provided, whether it is in person, whether it is via Zoom call or even via email, is going to be confidential between the client and the reader.

Another legal thing I personally have to do in the States is to make sure that I clearly mention that all the information providing during the reading is for entertainment purpose only.

Another important thing for me is mentioning that none of the information and advice and suggestion I am sharing during or after reading qualifies at any sort of medical financial legal advice, just so people know I am not here to be a stand-in for a lawyer, I am not a lawyer, I am not a doctor, I am not a counselor, and I am not a financial advisor, so if you need this specific type of support, you need to seek them outside of Tarot readings.

And similarly, even though it may sound like the same, I also make sure to mention that I do not read on medical issues, on financial matters or on legal matters.

Even though it may sound like it is the same, sometimes people may interpret certain things

you say in passing during a reading as medical or legal advice, even though it was not meant to be, and at the same time I make it very clear that I will not answer this type of matters, this is not my job, just so we are clear.

Now let's talk about ethics that are personal preferences, because these do matters as well,  because as the reader, you want to make sure that you stay where your strengths are and also that you make sure to have clear boundaries, so if a client tries to push them, you can just say, hey, no, this is not something I do, this is not something I am comfortable doing, you don't even have to explain yourself, just point at your ethical statements and what people may need to know.

In my case, one of the first things is, I will not answer yes or no questions or predict the future.

For me, free will is available to all of us, I am not here to tell you how exactly something will pan out, especially as with the reading we are looking at the current situation, and if something changes, if you take a different course of action, things may change.

So I have no idea what is going to happen, and I'm also not here to tell you exactly if you should do something or not.

I am happy to explore what going a certain route may look like, but the yes or no question is really only for you the client to answer.

Another of my boundaries is that I will not read about somebody that is not the client I am working with.

If you are asking any questions in relation to certain relationship or connection, whether it is personal or professional, I will only look at their role in the relationship, I will not do any reading or try to gather insight on other parties that I am not directly speaking to.

Now, other readers may have completely different, you know, preference that I do.

There is no judgment here.

I just really want to make sure that in my ethics and how I provide readings, I stay true to my preferences and to myself so I can better serve my clients.

So why are those ethics as a professional reader so important?

The first reason why ethics matter as a professional reader is that you showcase your professionalism, and you show that you are interested and invested in your client's wellbeing.

The second one is that you show you are willing and actively abiding by any legal requirements where maybe in the territory you are serving.

And finally, it also helps you as a reader by creating and studying clear boundaries and clear expectation, which helps you and your client have a more fruitful session or multiple sessions together.

So where do you share your ethics statement?

There are different places where you can do that.

The first of all is your website, especially on your service page. This is something I do on my own site.

And you can also share them in specific social media content or also on your booking link.

For example, people may get to your booking link right from a social media post, but you're not going to set all of your ethics in every social media post.

And if they do not visit your website, you want to make sure that your ethics and the expectations are clearly stated on that booking page as well.

You may also be mentioning them via email or also in direct conversation you may have with potential clients, whether it is via Zoom call, in person or via DM or emails.

So that's it for today.

I hope it was helpful to you both as a professional reader and as a client.
