Many people become triggered when they are confronted with situations or circumstances that challenge their beliefs, values, or sense of self. These triggers can manifest as emotional reactions such as anger, fear, sadness, or anxiety.
When you are triggered, you may feel as though you are under attack, and your body may react with a fight or flight response. Your heart rate may increase, your breathing may become shallow, and you may feel a sense of tension or tightness in your body.
For example, imagine that you are in a business meeting, and someone questions the validity of your idea. You may feel a sense of anger or defensiveness rising within you, and you may want to lash out at the other person or retreat from the situation altogether. This is a common example of how triggers can play out in a business setting.
Becoming aware of your triggers is an essential part of managing your emotional responses and living a more fulfilling life. When you are aware of your triggers, you can begin to recognize when you are being triggered and take steps to manage your emotional reactions.
