Writing a Column

[00:00:13] If you're an expert in your field and a savvy writer, a way you can gain additional exposure is through writing a column about your company brand or niche expertise. Now, this likely won't be something that you get paid for, but the value you gain through connecting with new audiences is invaluable.

[00:00:28] A place to begin is your local newspaper, as well as nonprofit magazines. Both are typically looking for quality contributors on a regular basis, and you'll have a better chance of publication at this level. As you build out your column portfolio you can progress to pitching larger, more exclusive publications such as Forbes and Fast Company, which are made up almost entirely of expert columns.

[00:00:50] Be sure you know your audience and ensure what you're writing is going to be valuable to them. Think about topics such as how-to guides, event and trend reporting, and current event commentary. Keep in mind, writing comes with a certain level of rejection. Don't take it personally if every piece you submit doesn't end up in print.
