Rob Winters: [00:00:00] This is the PodOps Media Podcast where we dive into marketing tips, tricks, and trends for entrepreneurs and small businesses. I'm your host, Rob Winters. Today's topic; What You Need to Know About Podcasts.
[00:00:13] With more than 5 million active podcasts in the world today. They are a growing media to be reckoned with. What people don't tell you is that 56% of all podcasts have ten or fewer episodes, and then only 17% have more than 50 episodes. When it comes to planning for your podcast and success, the first thing to keep in mind is your mindset. You need to be in this for the long haul and avoid getting discouraged if early listener numbers are low or you feel the effort is too high. It will pay off as long as you remain committed to producing great content for your audience.
[00:00:45] When considering who you want to target and the market for your actual podcast, you need to consider your content. Are you telling stories? Are you providing business advice? Are you creating a platform for advocates? It doesn't matter your genre; it's your content and how you promote it for your podcast. A few more numbers for podcast stats. The average podcast gets around 27 listeners, while the top 1% get around 3,200 listeners per episode. And then there is that average, well, I should say in-average, un-average, whichever is the correct terminology for that. Podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience, where there are millions of listeners for every single episode. The moral here is you, you need to define your listener persona and where they spend their time online. That might be Instagram, Spotify, TikTok, and then tailor your marketing efforts to those users where they are. As you promote your content and try to build out your audience.
[00:01:41] And last but not least, are you funny? Are you serious? Are you a little more on the not safe for work side? When you sit down at your microphone and press record, you want to bring the same sense of self-confidence and humor or personality that you would bring to a familiar gathering with your friends or your family. Whether you're a solo host or a co-host, being able to speak and remain natural in your language will convey to your listeners. If you're nervous or uncomfortable being recorded, do a few different warm-up takes to get the stress out, and even try that age-old practice of sitting in front of a mirror or turning on your computer's camera or app and smiling into it. It sounds silly, but it's one of those things that can really help you get the nerves out. And it's much less common to have your voice break when you're focusing on the individual in front of you who's looking back and is very excited.
[00:02:33] Are there any tips that you would give to a new podcaster to help them stay encouraged? Let me know your tips in the comment section of this episode at PodOpsHost.com/Tips.
