What are shame and guilt?

I’m not talking about shaming! (That’s for another day.)

Shame

1

a: a painful emotion caused by the consciousness of guilt.

b: the susceptibility to such emotion – Such as,

have you no shame?

2

: a condition of humiliating disgrace or disrepute – Such as,

the shame of being arrested.

a: something that brings censure or  reproach

also: something to be regretted.

b: a cause of feeling shame

 

Guilt

1

: the fact of having committed a breach of conduct, especially violating the law and involving a penalty – Such as,

A jury will determine the defendant's guilt or innocence. or

broadly: guilty conduct

2

a: the state of one who has committed an offense especially consciously. Such as,

His guilt was evident all over his face.

b: feelings of deserving blame, especially for imagined offenses or from a sense of inadequacy.
