A toxic culture can infiltrate every aspect of our lives, including our wellness journey. The pressure to constantly strive for perfection in terms of physical health and mental health can lead to harmful behaviours and attitudes. From extreme dieting to over-exercising, the wellness culture can sometimes do more harm than good.

Today I will delve into the four main toxic cultures that can jeopardize our journey to whole health.

Diet culture is a pervasive system of beliefs and practices that prioritize thinness and equate it with health, beauty, and moral virtue. This narrow focus on weight and body size perpetuates harmful stereotypes and stigmatizes those who do not fit the idealized image of what is considered healthy or attractive. By promoting unrealistic standards of beauty, diet culture creates a toxic environment that can lead to disordered eating behaviors, low self-esteem, and negative body image.

Drinking culture is another toxic influence that can negatively impact our overall well-being. Excessive alcohol consumption is often glamorized and normalized in society, leading many to believe that drinking heavily is a necessary part of socializing and having fun. However, the reality is that alcohol abuse can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health.

Beauty culture places an immense amount of importance on outward appearance, often promoting unrealistic standards of beauty that are unattainable for most people. This constant emphasis on looks can lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem, as individuals feel pressured to conform to societal ideals of attractiveness.

Wellness culture and the rise of fake wellness gurus in recent years have been a concerning trend in the health and wellness industry. These individuals often promote harmful or misleading information to their followers.

It is so important to have an awareness of toxic cultures disguised and marketed towards our vulnerabilities.
